Car Cover Care: How to Clean and Maintain Your Car Cover for Longer Life
A quality car cover is an investment in your vehicle’s protection. But even the best car cover needs proper care to perform at its best over time. At Hebei Jietuo Automotive Products Co., Ltd., we have manufactured hundreds of thousands of car covers for customers worldwide. Based on our experience, here are simple yet effective tips to help you clean and maintain your car cover — so it lasts longer and protects better.
1. Shake Off Loose Dirt Before Removing
Before taking the cover off your car, give it a gentle shake to dislodge loose dust, leaves, and debris. This prevents abrasive particles from scratching your car’s paint when you fold or store the cover.
2. Wash Regularly, But Not Too Often
How often should you wash your car cover? It depends on the environment:
-
Outdoor covers in dusty areas – every 2–4 weeks
-
Outdoor covers in normal conditions – every 1–2 months
-
Indoor covers – every 3–6 months
Over-washing can wear down the fabric and waterproof coating. Wash only when visibly dirty or after exposure to bird droppings, tree sap, or heavy rain.
3. Hand Wash or Gentle Machine Wash
Most car covers (including PEVA, aluminum foil composite, and Oxford fabric) can be hand washed or machine washed on a gentle cycle.
-
Hand wash: Use a large tub or clean surface, lukewarm water, and mild soap. Avoid bleach or fabric softeners.
-
Machine wash: Use a front-loading machine (no agitator) on delicate cycle with cold water. Place the cover in a mesh laundry bag for extra protection.
4. Air Dry Only – No Heat
Never put your car cover in a dryer. High heat can shrink the fabric, melt coatings, and damage elastic hems. Instead:
-
Hang the cover on a clothesline or over a clean railing
-
Spread it flat on a clean, dry surface away from direct sunlight
-
Ensure it is completely dry before folding to prevent mold and mildew
5. Store Properly When Not in Use
When you are not using the car cover for an extended period:
-
Fold it loosely (avoid tight creases that can weaken the fabric)
-
Store in the breathable storage bag provided (never in a plastic bag, which traps moisture)
-
Keep in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
6. Inspect for Damage Regularly
Check your car cover every few months for:
-
Small tears or holes – repair with fabric patches or replace if large
-
Loose elastic hems or broken buckles – these can be replaced
-
Signs of mold or mildew – wash immediately with a mild vinegar solution
7. Know When to Replace
Even with perfect care, car covers do not last forever. Typical lifespan:
-
Universal-fit covers – 1 to 2 years
-
Custom-fit covers – 2 to 4 years (depending on material and usage)
-
Heavy-duty composite covers – 3 to 5 years
Replace your cover if you notice significant fading, thinning fabric, or loss of water resistance.
